The butterfly valve is operated by a pneumatic actuator consisting of a metal disc that rotates around the body and initiates a sealing ring around the circumference of its elastic seat. The stem can be centrally mounted or offset mounted. There is also a packing unit that provides an additional sealing ring for protection in the event that the rubber seat is damaged by fire. Since it is a quarter valve, you only need to rotate the handle 90 degrees to fully open the valve.
In large plants such as refineries and power generation facilities, a high performance butterfly valve can be seen with a gearbox actuator and flywheel connection through its body. These are motorized valve actuators that initiate automatic valve opening and closing. Some of these valves have a switch so you can remotely monitor the position of the disc. So the function of the flywheel in this type of system is for emergency reasons when there is no power.
